A state veterinarian says he’s confident that border inspectors are keeping dangerous diseases like African Swine Fever out of the U.S. Doug Meckes is North Carolina’s state veterinarian.
But at the same time, Meckes warns that the virus that’s ravaged one-fifth of China’s hog population is nothing that has been experienced in recent memory…
China is home to nearly half the world’s hog population. African Swine Fever is transmitted through sick animals, as well as contaminated feed and casings. Although the disease only affects pigs and does not affect humans, there is no known cure or vaccine.
