FLOODING RE-EMPHASIZES NEED FOR LOCKS MODERNIZATION

Midwest House and Senate lawmakers say it’s time to finally fund locks modernization on the Upper Mississippi and Illinois Rivers was first authorized a decade ago.  Lawmakers from Illinois, Iowa, Missouri and Wisconsin have written House and Senate appropriators to ‘get off the dime’ and fund the project.  Among those lawmakers is Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley.

But, the Army Corps of Engineers has put other waterway projects ahead of the aging locks, some of them over 80 years old.

Nearly three-quarters of U.S. farm exports were carried on U.S. waterways in 2015, while ag exports account for about one-fourth of farm cash receipts.
