Senate Republicans organized a barrage of attacks last week on the Green New Deal, seeking to peg Democrats and its policies as ‘extremist,’ amid a bitterly divided government. Among the ten senators taking part in the coordinated criticisms was Missouri’s senior senator, Roy Blunt.
Blunt says even the conservative estimate of $36 trillion would be enough to rebuild the entire interstate highway system every year for a hundred years. Democrats including ag committee ranking member Debbie Stabenow of Michigan called Republican criticisms overblown and funded by wealthy donors.
Iowa Republican Joni Ernst organized the floor attack on the Green New Deal, billing proposals such as an end to fossil fuel use and building all new ‘green energy’ buildings and utilities a “socialist fantasy” meant to appeal to the extreme left. About 100 Democrats between the House and Senate have signed onto the idea, including Representative Lacy Clay of Saint Louis.
